I have a 92 4runner with 410,000 miles on it. It's got a 3.0 in it (the second one), and according to a local Toyota specialist the engine is toast.
Last week my radiator burst at the top, so thinking that was my only problem, i replaced my radiator myself and figured i would be set. The day after i replaced it though, i noticed that i was leaking a LARGE amount of antifreeze from my engine and not my new radiator. It looked like it was coming from the water pump. My local toyota mechanic told me that i needed a new water pump and that i have a blown head gasket, and that my engine is leaking from the timing belt idler pulley. He also said i need a new knock sensor. He told me that i should find a new vehicle, or get my engine rebuilt. I don't have the experience to rebuild my engine, and i only have about 5 grand to get a new rig. I'm getting a second opinion from another shop tomorrow, and if he says the engine is toast as well, i was thinking of doing a 3.4 swap. I live near the Denver area and was wondering if anyone knows of a reputable shop in the area that can do a full swap (everything included) and how much it would cost. I don't have the money myself, but a family member is willing to loan me a few thousand to get it done. Is it worth putting a new engine into a truck with over 400,000 miles on it? The truck itself is in good shape, with a straight body and 2 sets of brand new tires. Or, should i find another vehicle for a few grand? I live in the mountains and work at a ski area, so it must have 4wd/awd, and a truck would be preferable. I'm done with the 3.slow though. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!

 

Not usually the place for questions, but YES your engine is gone. If you drove it at all in which it sounds like you did with the head gasket blown then most if not all your internals are gone. You can get a crate engine dropped in for about 2-4 grand depending on location, availability , mods etc.. The 3.0 IN MY OPINION is a turd, go get a 2.2 and you will love it. good luck...
