Riding rough
I have a 99 4-runner with 230,000 and it probably
won't suprise any of you that it still runs great,
however, it rides really rough. I call it the "stage
coach". I think the front end is worn out. Any
suggestions on what I should do. Also is it a tough
job? Ive done some simple things like replace the
starter, put on new brakes etc.

I would begin with brand new shocks first (I highly recommend Bilstein or the OEM Tokico)-- you may discover you'd don't need a lot else. Of course, at 230k you probably could use new bushings and ball joints; I've never done them myself and I understand it requires a special press tool to accomplish. Do you have any noticeable sags anywhere (i.e., does the truck sit level or no?)? If you aren't dipping anywhere, your springs are probably fine. I'd go shocks 1st, and if you're not satisfied look to bushings/ball joints. You might even be able to rent the tool somewhere if you don't want to give your $ to a shop...</P>

By the way, you have 230k on a '99? Did you mean '89? If you did, I'm pretty sure it's a torsion bar front end, and I was speaking of the double wishbone/coil spring setup on 3rd 4Runners. I don't know much about torsion bar IFS- I've never owned a truck with it- but some of the other cats on this site will be able to drop some expertise on you for sure. <edited><editID>BManning</editID><editDate>38384.6387847222</editDate></edited>
