89 or 90 T4R
Hi all, I'm new here, just found this forum. Just browsing through b/c I'm planning on going to a car auction to bid for a SUV.
There are 2 available

89 4runner 2D 5SPD 315,382KM
90 4runner 4D 5SPD 220,511KM

Could you tell me if these will run well w/o much repair at these milage? When I go inspect the car at site, is there anything specific I should look for in these models?

It looks like 89 is a 1st gen and 90 is a 2nd gen, which one is better? Do you think they are great cars? There's also 95/95 pathfinders available, would you suggest those instead? I know I'm asking in the toyota forum, so it might be baised, but I'm open to comments. I'm assuming both of these SUV will be stock. They don't seem like they have A/C but it's not #1 priority, just need the heat to work. I would be using this for winter highway driving to mountains, carrying my dogs, and minimal offroad?

Does the 2 door model have back windows that can open? I'll find out at the auction anyhow. Thanks!

Oh and what's a reasonable price these 2 cars should cost? have any of you auction a car before? I was thinking, it's not much difference getting it from a dealer, private or auction, if there're any problems, there are no waranty anyway.

Both of these are standard, not automatic, is that a problem with autos? My gf don't like stick shifts.

I would go for the 2nd gen, merely for the fact of less miles. I have a '91 and it has about 194,000 miles on it... I'm not exactly sure what that equates to in km... but... I'm sure it's pretty high. Anyway, the first gens are cool because they have the removable tops, but can get a little noisy in the cab. The 2nd gens are still like trucks which is cool, but they are quiter and a little more refined. Also... if either, or both have the 3vze v6 engine, make sure you get papers on it as there was a recall regarding the headgasket. Make sure you check on that. Before you actually purchase them, get the VIN numbers and call Toyota Corporate (number on toyota.com webpage). They can tell you if your truck is eligible for the recall or if it's already been done. Just a few things to think about. I couldn't be happier with my truck... (maybe I could... I'm going to swap in a 5VZE 3.4L engine). But, don't go to a Pathfinder... A Toyota will keep you happier than any Nissan could.

The 90 sounds like a better idea as the younger it is, the less likely it will be that there are stuff wrong with it.
