check engine light mystery
I have a 1996 4Runner V-6 with 170k and the check engine light has been on for two years. The codes show a random cylinder misfire of 2 4 and 6. Noone can tell me why? I had the vehicle at a mechanic for 2 days and he ripped the engine apart. He checked the spark plugs and wires the 02 sensors and he moved the fuel injectors to the opposite side. The codes continued to show up 2, 4 and 6. Then he noticed that a sprocket on the cam shaft was moving slightly and put some hard core glue on it. The light went for to pass the inspection and then came back on my way home after an 800 dollar bill. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. I love the car but inspection time is coming about and I don't want to spend a fortune for no solution. Thanks.

RE: check engine light mystery
I have always hated the codes, since they say what the computer thinks it is. Its not ever correct either.
I know its probably not it, but ever throw a timing light on it?
Is it a hard or soft code? meaning is it on when you first start it up? or does it come on after driving a while?
