Check engine light came on at 150k miles?
Hi all - my 1996 4Runner (2wd) check engine light just came on at 150k miles. Can anyone tell me if there is a specific / major service due at 150k (indicated by light) or could it be anything?
thanks, (finally got my 1990 jeep wrangler to pass smog - on to the next car!)

I don't know the answer to your question.
However, the check engine light oftenmeans your O2 sensor is bum. However, those sensors are too expensive to just replace for the heck of it. You canat least check and make sure one of thewires to the O2 sensor isn't cut or loose. If the wires check outOK, then call around a few shops, see how muchthey charge for a Onboard Diagnostic System (OBD) check. Given yours is a 1996 model, I'm pretty sure its a OBD2 system. Or, maybe one of your gearhead friends has an OBD2 reader. That will give you a code which tellsyouthe problem component. The charges vary widely from shop to shop, so make sure you compare a few shops.
If the O2 sensor has four wires coming out of it, you have OBD2. If there is only one wire, you have OBD1.

Good call to just read codes first. It can be free, depending on where you are and companies that are available some places offer to check your codes FREE!!! Some places want like $40-up which is just CRAZY! They try to charge you for an hour of labor on something that takes seriously like 15 mins TOPS, just to read the codes.
