2003 4Runner steering wheel shutter/loose
I'm new to this forum and searching for those experiencinga similar issue with any new model 4runner (2003 or newer).
While driving slowly (35 or slower) over pot holes, road bumps, or uneven terrian (very light offroading) there is a suttle shutter in the steering wheel. The actual steering wheel itself is solid and has no play but when traversing slightly uneven terrain it feels as those something in the steering system is "loose." Whereever it originates from I don't know, but it travels up the steering column and is felt with a light grip on the steering wheel.
I've taken to 3 service centers, including a Toyota dealership, and all 3 cannot findanything wrong. They say everything looks intact, from the damper bar to the ball joints to all bushings. I have a feeling the technicians areconducting a "surface" check only and wouldn't be able to spot a problem on the interior of the entire front end system.
They blamed it on new tires and brakes, both of which have proven to be incorrect.
Anyone out there have any advice or experience anything similar with their 4Runner?
Appreciate any inupt.
Thanks.

Steering dampner?
There are alot of issues out there for the 4-runner on things/problems like this. Everyone has found something different. It should be anything from the Diff to the wheel bearings and anything inbetween...
Good luck with the find and keep us up to date..

Try inflating your tires alittle higher, also deflate your tires alittle, to see if there is any difference. When i changed my tires on my jeep there was a "different" ride to it.I noticed it was the tires, but like jtimport says it could be anything. Good luck and keep us up to date.

I have a 98 4runner and experiencing the exact same problem! Several dealer techs have looked at it and said everthing is good. I'm going to change front shocks as one tech suggested this could be the problem

It can be sooooooooooo many things. Try to fingue out when it started, did you change tires, hit a hard bump etc..
Then work your way back. it can be almost anything, good luck.
