Timing belt replacement on 3vzw, 3.0 6 cy
Hi all:

Any tips and tricks to timing belt replacements?

I have a new w.pump, belt, all idlers and tensioners..

Is it similar to a DOHC cam in a Lexus? Just line the TDC marks up and don't let the engine or cams turn? Maybe ck. that no 1 cylinder = all the tdc marks..

I tried to search for archives, unsuccessfully..

TIA

It was just as I thought, although one of those slick tools (lilse or other) to lock both cams would have been helpful.

The Haynes /Clymer manual was sufficent if the Toyota FSM is not available.

I also used the Toyota belt vs an aftermarket one (Gates, Dayco etc.). They have marks for each cam and TDC, helping you to eyeball if the cams move and everything stays on the "hash" marks so timing is not affected.

The water pump was fine, but why not change it since your in there anyway.

If you don't have an impact wrench to removed the bolt on the vibration/harmonic damper/crank pulley you can use a breaker bar and cheater pipe. Have an assist hold a large screw driver or pry bar on the ring gear teeth on the flex plate (if automatic) or flywheel (if man. trans.) so the engine will not move while loosening and tightening the bolt.

I've since sold the Toyota and purchased the wife a larger SUV. We miss it though!

Good luck
