Help: Pink Milkshake!
Hi all, I have been a lurker here for about 2 years, since I bought 4Runner from my father, but have never needed a reason to post..., until now. As title states I believe I am the victim of the dreaded "Pink Milkshake" on my 1999 4Runner SR5 w/ 199,000 miles but in mint condition and loaded. I was driving to work this morning on an interstate, blissfully ignorant in the pouring rain and did not notice any steam from engine compartment, that is until I noticed tranny slipping.
I looked down at gauges and saw I was overheating so I placed truck in neutral and coasted about 1/2 mile off of highway and shut her down. I have been reading about my best options for repairs:
1) Replace radiator and flush tranny and hope for the best.
2) replace radiator and trans with either a new, remanufactured or used transmission.
Problem with option 1 is I had read that it takes many gallons of trans fluid to flush and even then it may only last a couple hundred miles, if I'm lucky. I'm really thinking of going with used transmission b/c funds are tight right now and I really want to keep truck. My father babied this vehicle since he bought it brand new and it is a dream to drive and I think I still have about 100,000 miles left on engine.
If I can get some opinions on what you think is my best option.
Also when searching online @ PartsHotLines.com for transmission these are the different types:
A.T., 4 WD, 6 cyl, California emission standards, from 6/99
A.T., 4 WD, 6 cyl, California emission standards, thru 5/99
A.T., 4 WD, 6 cyl, Fed emission standards (may include High Altitude emission controls), from 6/99
A.T., 4 WD, 6 cyl, Fed emission standards (may include High Altitude emission controls), thru 5/99
Anyone know which one I would need?
I live in Mass by the way and truck was purchased here. Ya know, I read about pink milkshake and had been planning to change rad. sometime, but sometime never came, grrrr.
Sorry for long post and thanx in advanced.
